JANUARY 19, 2017
"Getting Ready for Sunday" is a resource we provide to help the church look ahead to the upcoming Sunday. We want to prepare well for gathering together by reading God’s word, praying, and singing.
This week will be our second week of our new sermon series: 1st and 2nd Samuel: A Man After God’s Heart. Check out the sermon series bumper here:
This week we are looking at 1 Samuel 16:1-13 and seeing how David’s story points us to Jesus: an obscure man from Galilee who was raised to the most extraordinary position of all.
Our Call to Worship is Psalm 40:9-11
I have told the glad news of deliverance
in the great congregation;
behold, I have not restrained my lips,
as you know, O Lord.
I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
from the great congregation.
As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain
your mercy from me;
your steadfast love and your faithfulness will
ever preserve me!
This Psalm reminds us that we are called to be unrestrained in our worship because God has been unrestrained in his love for us. Christ has given himself to death so that we might be freed from the power of sin, death and evil. Because of this great work of Christ, we are called to actively look for how God has been working deliverance in every area of our lives. As we experience the work of God in our lives, this Psalm commands us to not hold back from telling one another of the ways we have experienced the steadfast love of God.
Read Psalm 40:9-11 and pray that God would:
Bring to mind ways we have experienced his faithfulness this week.
Ask God for opportunities to share his steadfast love.
Here are the songs we are singing this week. We chose these songs because they express how uniquely great God is. They call us to rejoice and rest in his work on our behalf.
Here is last week's sermon in case you missed it.
