Getting Ready for Sunday, January 29

JANUARY 26, 2017

Church family,

"Getting Ready for Sunday" is a resource we provide to help the church look ahead to the upcoming Sunday. We want to prepare well for gathering together by reading God’s word, praying, and singing.

This week we are continuing our sermon series 1st and 2nd Samuel: A Man After God’s Heart. Check out the sermon series bumper here:

This week we are looking at 1 Samuel 17:1-54 and seeing how David trusted in Yahweh and experienced victory over Goliath to show us that Jesus is the true victor and we experience victory as we trust in Him.

Our Call to Worship is Psalm 139:7-14:

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.
For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.

This Psalm calls us to worship God by reminding us of God’s nearness, care, and power. This psalm challenges our doubts when we feel like God is far off or uninterested. This psalm reminds us that God chooses to glorify himself by fully knowing and loving us, and this truth grows trust, peace, and obedience in our hearts.

Read Psalm 139:7-14 and pray that God would:

  1. Grow trust and obedience in our hearts.

  2. Ask God for opportunities to share his steadfast love.

Here are the songs we are singing this week. We chose these songs because they remind us that our identity is defined and sustained by the perfect work of Christ.
