"Getting Ready for Sunday" is a resource we provide to help the church look ahead to the upcoming Sunday. We want to prepare well for gathering together by reading God’s word, praying, and singing.
This week we conclude the season of Advent. Find out more about why we celebrate Advent here.
This Sunday our service will be a Lessons and Carols service. What is a Lessons and Carols service? In a Lessons and Carols service we read different passages from scripture (the “lessons”) and sing songs (the “carols”) that tell the whole story of God’s redemption of the world through Christ. We do this to remember the true story of the whole world and what God has done and will do. It shows us that our own stories and lives are part of God’s bigger story of redemption through Christ. Like all of the Advent season, a Lessons and Carols Service, calls us to find our ultimate hope, peace, joy, and love in the world changing reality that Christ has come, is with us, and will come again.
Our Call to Worship and Advent candle lighting is based on Isaiah 7:14:
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel, God with us.
Love is the theme of the fourth week of Advent. In this week we are reminded of how God has shown his great love for us through the incarnation. When Jesus came as a child, to suffer, die, and defeat sin, death and evil, he showed us the depth and intensity of God’s love for us. He showed us that nothing would stop him from rescuing a fallen creation and humanity from the power of sin and darkness. He showed us how much he hates sin, death, and evil, but how much he loves to set free, heal, and restore. Christ did this by dwelling among us and taking our place at the cross and in the tomb. God calls us to respond in worship to his great love by reminding us that he is truly “God with Us”. He is not God far away from us or God against us. He is the God who removes our sin so we can dwell with him.
Read Isaiah 7:14 and:
Pray that we would have a deep, sure knowledge of God’s presence with us.
Pray for those that are separated from God and ask him to restore them to himself.
Here are the songs we are singing this week. We chose them because they help tell and celebrate God’s plan of salvation through Christ.
