NOVEMBER 30, 2017
"Getting Ready for Sunday" is a resource we provide to help the church look ahead to the upcoming Sunday. We want to prepare well for gathering together by reading God’s word, praying, and singing.
This week we begin the season of Advent. Find out more why we celebrate Advent here.
This week we are looking at Matthew 1:1-17 and seeing how God uses very different and broken people to accomplish his plan for salvation.
Our Call to Worship and Advent candle lighting is based on Revelation 21:3-5.
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” 5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Hope is the theme of the first week of Advent. In the season of Advent, we are given to space to reflect on where we go looking for hope apart from Jesus. We can then repent and rejoice in the truth of our great hope in Christ. Revelation 21 calls us to worship Jesus in true hope because we look to only him as the source of all comfort and restoration. Nothing else in this world can make us whole again or heal our broken world. This week we get to look forward in hope to when Christ will come again.
Read Revelation 21:3-5 and:
Pray that we would be made aware of the place we look to for hope instead of Christ.
Pray that God would fill our hearts and minds with the hope of Christ.
Here are the songs we are singing this week. We chose them because they point us to the grace and hope we have in Christ.
